Enlarge Image Steve Miller Band performs at MTS Centre in Winnipeg Friday, April 4. 3.5 stars out of fiveThe Steve Miller Band doesn’t exactly have a small catalogue to pull from. The blues-rock titans’ discography spans over four decades and includes 18 studio albums (including a Miller solo effort), three live albums, seven greatest hits packages and 30 singles. And SMB is still making music; after a 17-year recording hiatus, the band released 2010’s Bingo!, which was immediately followed up with 2011’s Let Your Hair Down just 10 months later. Even so, Miller, 70, knows his bread and butter. For Friday night’s show at the MTS Centre, the Milwaukee-born guitar slinger hung close to the hits from his mid-’70s heyday, treating 5,500 fans to the songs that have become staples of classic rock radio. (There’s a reason SMB’s Greatest Hits: 1974-1978 package is its biggest-selling album in North America. Taking the spartan stage promptly at 8:45 p.m., the Steve Miller Band kicked things off with Jungle Love, off 1977’s Book of Dreams before heading right on into Swingtown — which got those on the floor on their feet. The crowd didn’t have to wait long for Take The Money and Run — the feel good summertime pop hit from 1976’s Fly Like an Eagle — which appeared three songs in and featured a blazing solo courtesy of keyboardist Joseph "Hands of Soul" Wooten. Living in the U.S.A followed, bringing with it the night’s first scorching guitar solo. Indeed, there was no shortage of guitar heroics on display, and the Steve Miller Band is comfortable letting its estimable musicianship do the talking. There was no arena-rock bombast; the show felt more like a loose, blues-bar jam. During the sexy, slinky The Stake, the band looked like it was having the time of its life. Soul legend Sonny Charles (ex-Checkmates), who joined the Steve Miller Band in 2008, stole the show when he took over the mic for Ooh Poo Pah Doo and Further Up on the Road, eliciting the biggest crowd response of the night. In addition to a huge, arena-filling voice, the guy’s got some sweet dance moves, too. Mid set saw SMB delve into 1973’s landmark The Joker, with the hat-trick of Mary Lou, Sugar Babe and a funked-out take on single Shu Ba Da Du Ma Ma Ma Ma. "This is the campfire portion of the show," Miller said after Dance, Dance, Dance before taking a seat and serenading the room with a short solo-acoustic mini set that included Wild Mountain Honey, Gangster of Love, True Fine Love and The Lovin’ Cup. It was the jewel of the show, proving that Miller’s voice has stood the test of time. Miller was re-joined by his band — and, regrettably, a giant version of the terrifying mask from The Joker album cover — for the title track. The mask’s lips moved like the badly dubbed cartoon character from your nightmares during the chorus and was awkwardly wheeled out when the song was over. It was kind of a WTF moment that distracted from what was one of the night’s biggest songs. At press time, SMB was jamming out Rock’n Me which had everyone in the house singing and clapping along. The vibe of the room was often that of a polite, sit-down show, which brought the overall energy in the room down a bit. Still, it was refreshing to be at a concert — and this was a concert in every sense of the word — at which people were there for the music. Eighteen-year-old blues guitar wunderkind Matthew Curry — and his band, The Fury — opened the show with a set that also had no shortage of flying fingers. Like Jonny Lang before him, the Illinois native has got a voice that belies his young years and, like the headliner, his solos never came at the expense of hooks; If I Don’t Got You, the title track from his 2011 debut, is as tight as they come. While his compositions feel a little blues-by-the-numbers, his virtuosity is undeniable. jen.zoratti@freepress.mb. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers plans to shore up Mississippi's Barrier Islands by pumping in some 20 million cubic yards of sand. The corps disclosed plans at a public meeting Thursday in Biloxi.The corps plans to close the Camille Cut and restore the southern shoreline of East Ship Island. Those two projects will encompass about 1,500 acres. The work will be done in five phases.The restoration on Ship Island will cost about $363 million. The southwest corner of the island has already been restored.A project to restore dunes and the beach on eastern Cat Island, which hinges on the federal government buying that part of the island from BP, would cost $20 million.The corps also will try to correct mistakes that were made as the Pascagoula ship channel was dredged and that work could help replenish the island chain."There is sand that migrates along the system, you might hear people talk about the littoral system," said Justin McDonald, chief engineer on the project. Now, the look has been applied to the refreshed 2015 Ford Focus, and the result looks much like an enlarged Fiesta. Is it an improvement? The headlights appear narrower, but they bulge out from the body slightly and now feature projector lamps. The front valance has also been redesigned, receiving chrome accents surrounding the available LED foglights. Around back, the rear fascia has been tweaked slightly on the hatchback model, now looking less rounded. The taillights have been brought in on the top and bottom just a smidge for an overall sleeker look. The hatch itself is also new, having been smoothed out by laser brazing. Arabic and bird watching are among the upcoming spring continuing education classes at West Virginia State University in Institute. A Birding and Ornithology class will offer an introduction to recreational birding and avian ecology with an emphasis on developing field identification skills. Five classroom lectures and two field experiences are designed to offer participants the basics of birding and nature appreciation. The class will be taught by Steven Richards, associate professor of Health and Human Performance, and will meet Thursdays from 6 to 8 p.m. from April 17 through May 15 for the classroom lectures in Fleming Hall, Room 162. Field experiences will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 26 and May 10. The cost is $75. Also this spring, WVSU Continuing Education will offer an Essentials of Arabic course, which will introduce the basic elements of the modern standard Arabic language. Specifically, the course will emphasize the development of basic listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. Taught by Ali Ziyati, associate professor of communications, the course will meet in Jones Hall, Room 208, on Tuesdays from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. April 8 through May 6. The cost is $100. A Basic Drawing course will also be offered this spring, with Instructor Frankie Kane. This course will cover the techniques of drawing to allow students to create buildings, furniture and other objects. This class will meet in Wallace Hall, Room 622, on Tuesdays from 5:30 to 7 p.m. April 8 through April 29. The cost is $100. In addition, materials needed for the class are a No. 6 drawing pencil, ruler, gummy eraser and a medium sized sketchpad. Lee senior Courtney Breaden will appear on “Wheel of Fortune” as part of its annual “College Week” this Thursday at 7 p.m. Ms. Breaden, an English education major from Marietta, Ga., grew up watching the show with her mother and finally got the opportunity this spring to be on the other side of the screen. “We always talked about how cool it would be to be on the show,” said Ms. Breaden. “I applied online and got an email about a year and a half later.”n“Wheel of Fortune” asked Breaden to send in a video interview and from that she was invited to audition in Atlanta. Mr. Breaden asked Lee University President Dr. Paul Conn to pay for her plane ticket to California during a Lee “Ask the President” chapel, where students are encouraged to ask the president anything they want. Dr. Conn agreed to fund her ticket if she had the opportunity to go. One week before filming, Breaden received a phone call from “Wheel of Fortune” staff affording her that opportunity. On Feb. 13, Ms. Breaden, along with her fiance and fellow Lee student Jordan Ramos, her brother, and a friend, flew to Los Angeles for filming. “I was a little intimidated when I arrived because all of the other contestants were from Ivy Leagues and big state schools,” said Ms. Breaden. “I was proud to represent Lee among them all. Ms. Breaden spent all day filming on Feb. 14 and became good friends with the other contestants, but the highlight of her experience was meeting Pat Sajak and Vanna White. “It was a really fun experience,” said Ms. Breaden. “It went by fast and seems like a big blur now. A viewing party for Breaden will be held on April 10 at 7 p.m. in the Paul Conn Student Union on Lee’s campus. Ms. Breaden will graduate from Lee in May with hopes to teach high school English and eventually become a guidance counselor. She is currently student teaching at Ooltewah High School. At Lee she is involved in Epsilon Lambda Phi, Pi Kappa Pi, Sigma Tau Delta, and Kairos Scholars, Lee’s honors program. “This is a wonderful opportunity for Courtney,” said Alan McClung, dean of students at Lee. “I know she will do great on the show, and I look forward to the results. Ms. Breaden and Mr. Ramos are set to be married in August. If money is won from the show, they hope to put it towards a down payment on their first house. The ’90s marked a decade where hip-hop dominated airwaves and its offspring, rap, forewent the lighthearted, dancy days of yore and figured out the holy grail to mainstream success meant the more gangster the approach, the more lucrative the profits. In 1995, somewhere on record store shelves between Raekwon’s Only Built 4 Cuban Linx and 2Pac’s Me Against the World lived one of Stevie Wonder’s lesser appreciated works, Conversation Peace—the singer’s first album after an eight-year hiatus. Not for naught, this album birthed a socially conscious masterpiece with “My Love is With You” that, similar to Pac’s “Outlaw” album-track, addressed themes of gan–related murder and gun violence. Unlike its counterpart though, Wonder assumes the perspective of the victim, whereas 2Pac adopts the role of the killer (granted he wrestles with personal feelings of imprisonment to the gang culture). At any rate both tracks, coming from two artists at opposite ends of the spectrum, stand as a significant testament of the times in 1995 where American streets were held hostage to tragedy. Of course, if Wonder’s “My Love is With You” were played in the streets of present-day Chicago, it would still accurately reflect street culture and its themes of gun violence would be just as meaningful—if not more. Interestingly enough, Chicago-based duo M&O, formerly known as Milo & Otis, credit Wonder’s socially-infused work as one of the greatest influences on their own music. “I’ve been listening to ["My Love is With You"] since I was 8- or 9-years-old, but it wasn’t until I got older that I realized what the song was about because it’s so dancy,” says Jamila Woods (Milo), vocals and lyrics. “It makes you feel movement and feel like dancing to forget about pain, or dancing as a form of rebellion against the bad going on. I just love the layers that exist in music like that. It’s true. If unfocused, it’s easy to forget the grave subject matter of the song while getting lost in its bounciness and fun. The same could be said for M&O’s music. It’s easy to be swept away by the lightness and prettiness of Woods’s soulful vocals and forget that she’s singing about the execution of Troy Davis—as with the duo’s 2012 release “1108 Troy Davis” from their debut album The Joy—or singing about motifs of rejection—as with the track “Jimi Savannah” from their latest album, Almost Us. Most of this swift forgetfulness, according to bass/producer Owen Hill (Otis), stems from the pure tonality of Woods’s sound—one that he likens to R&B angel, Aaliyah. “A lot of singers have different effectuations in the way that they display emotion. Many of them use a lot of runs or vocal acrobats,” says Hill. “Aaliyah just kind of sings straight up and it’s much more about the tone of her voice and she relies on that. I think Jamila does that as well. The legendary dynamic that was Aaliyah and Timbaland is another major influence on M&O’s music and, much like the late singer and super-producer, M&O have a natural, almost kismet energy that is displayed somewhere between the notes and melodies of the stellar tunes they create together. Hill builds the space and atmosphere of the music. Woods provides the poignancy and vocals. Together they take listeners on an adventurous and soulful ride that we hope never ends. Mazda told U.S. regulators that it is recalling 42,000 sedans with 2.5-liter engines from model years 2010 to 2012 in the United States. Mazda officials were not immediately available to report recalls outside of the United States. Three years ago, Mazda recalled about 65,000 Mazda6 sedans in North America from model years 2009 and 2010, also because of spider webs blocking evaporative canister vent lines. The same issue is the cause of the most recent recall, Mazda told the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The web weaved by a spider can lead to a restriction of fuel flow, which in turn can reduce fuel tank pressure when the emission control system purges vapors from the evaporative canister. This can put stress on the fuel tank, which may crack and leak fuel, increasing the risk of a fire, a report filed with NHTSA says. Mazda said it is not aware of any fires because of this risk. In 2011, Reuters reported that the Yellow Sac spider was the culprit in that year's recall. It just likes the smell of gasoline, an auto analyst told Reuters at the time. Mazda attempted to remedy the problem by adding a spring to the canister vent line to keep spiders from crawling inside. For the most part, that solution worked, but after several reports of cracked fuel tanks in sedans equipped with the spring, Mazda engineers tried to figure out the spider's route to the canister. After learning of nine cases in which tanks were damaged even though a spring was loaded, engineers determined that a change in the car's software would keep tanks from cracking even if a spider web blocks a vent. Mazda will inform owners in the recall campaign to bring cars to dealers, where the evaporative canister vent line will be checked and cleared if necessary. Also, the dealerships will reprogram software. The blockage is not present on other models made by Mazda and occurs only in cars made at a plant in Flat Rock, Mich., at which Mazda once produced cars jointly with Ford Motor Co.
