Photograph by: Jeanine Lee , The GazetteMONTREAL — “Barring some frankly unforeseeable collapse, Philippe Couillard’s Liberal party is going to emerge with a victory on Monday. That’s the conclusion of a new Ekos research poll that has the Liberals winning 40 per cent of the vote, compared with 26.3 per cent for the Parti Quebecois, 21 per cent for the Coalition Avenir Quebec and 9.6 per cent for Quebec Solidaire. The numbers, based on a random sample of 1,422 eligible voters between March 27 and April 3, compare with other polls done over the last week. None of the polls show definitively whether the Liberals will form a minority or majority government, however. None of them offer good news for the PQ and Pauline Marois. If the end results do reflect this latest poll, it will be the worst election for the PQ since it first participated in an election in 1970. Ekos president Frank Graves said the results betray a huge miscalculation on the PQ’s part, and a poorly executed campaign. “Marois’s gambit has turned out to be a horrible disaster for her and her party,” Graves said Friday. “Using the secular charter, which was gaining momentum, to drive a wedge to a majority and drive a path to a referendum didn’t look that dumb to me. But the campaign wasn’t very well executed and the interaction of the economy and the referendum issue will end up spelling disaster. Support or lack thereof for a referendum was decisive. Ekos asked respondents what pollsters call a “forced choice” question about sovereignty, giving them only two choices: independence or the status quo. Some 65 per cent said they’d rather stick with the status quo. But according to Graves, it’s not out of any love for the Canadian federation, but more because Quebecers already feel detached from the rest of the country, and that they have the powers they need to be independent in spirit, if not legally. In 1998, 60 per cent of francophone Quebecers said they felt an attachment to the rest of Canada. In 2013 that number had dropped to 30 per cent. (In the rest of Canada, attachment went from 90 per cent in 1998 to 85 per cent in 2013. “The issue of a referendum has become moot because Quebecers have essentially left the country and the risk of an adventure which could cause strains on a fragile economic outlook didn’t make sense,” Graves explained. “People think there’s a rising affection for federalism, but I don’t think so. At the same time, Quebecers are worried about the economy. In a recent poll commissioned by the CBC, Ekos asked Quebecers what they thought were the most important election issues. Respondents overwhelmingly pointed to jobs and the economy, while issues such as language, sovereignty, and the Charter — all key elements of the PQ platform — were given little weight. Graves believes that in the end, the charter of values may have backfired on the PQ. “I like to believe that Quebecers look at some of the features of Bill 60 and say they’re not sure this is the way we want to go. Quebec has strong social justice values and this gambit was based on politics that would appeal to xenophobic tendencies. So I’m heartened by the fact they seemed to have not gone down that road. The only wild card now, Graves said, is voter turnout. Few people actually change their minds in the last days of an election campaign, he said. The notion that they switch at the last minute comes from pollsters trying to explain why they have egg on their face, he said. csolyom@montrealgazette. The young hero returned from Philadelphia on Friday where the donation took place. Friends and family gathered in Olathe on Friday to honor 11 year old Zachary Hofen for his bravery, after he donated his bone marrow to his little brother, who has been fighting leukemia. “It was quite a surprise,” said Hofen, about the crowd outside his house as he pulled up. Hofen had just returned home from Philadelphia where he donated his bone marrow cells Monday to his nine-year-old brother, Braden. Courtesy: Braden’s Hope“If I didn’t donate, he would die,” said Hofen. Hofen’s dad, Brian Hofen, says his youngest son, Braden, has had an extended battle with childhood cancer. Through various treatments over the years, this past July, Braden was diagnosed with treatment induced pre-leukemia. The next step was a bone marrow transplant in order to take a curative path. “Cancer is something that affects the whole family,” said Brian. “In doing that search, turned out that his brother Zachary, who is now 11 years old, is the only match in the world. Hofen says the donation wasn’t exactly easy to go through. “They poked me about 50 times,” he said. Brian is exceptionally grateful and proud of his older son for going through with it. “I couldn’t be prouder,” added Brian. “It’s a situation where he recognized that being the match, it needed to be done, and he’s been extremely brave throughout the whole process. No child wants to get stuck with needles. Friends and family came up with the idea to give Hofen a hero’s welcome when he returned from giving the donation. Members of the Olathe Fire Department came to show their support, and members of the military also attended to honor Hofen, and presented him with a plaque for his bravery. “They harvested them in about a two and a half hour procedure, and in about three and a half to four hours later, Zach and Braden were side by side in Braden’s room, and Zach got to see those cells go into Braden,” said the boys’ father, Brian. Brian says they wanted to celebrate Hofen’s bravery and hopefully encourage other kids not to be afraid in a situation like this. “Help other people. That’s the values that most every parent and person in this world is trying to instill in children, and so why wouldn’t we want to reinforce that,” Brian added. Overall, that represents a 78 percent reunification/adoption rate, a significant increase over the 63 percent rate in 2013 and 54 percent mark in 2012, before the Pieloch Pet Adoption Center opened July 2 at Nebraska 2 and 70th Street. In practical terms, the happy tales translate into a lot of vaccines, microchips and spay and neuter surgeries for dogs and cats -- all things that can tax the Humane Society’s operating budget, Executive Director Bob Downey said. Not to mention the additional staff needed to operate two local Humane Society locations. Former Lincoln businessman Mark Pieloch was well aware of the financial growing pains that would result from his $1.5 million gift to help build the new Pet Adoption Center. That’s why he promised to help raise funds every year. This year’s gift is a completely restored 1970 Chevelle SS Coupe that will be raffled off Oct. 10. Five hundred fifty raffle tickets will be sold at $100 each, providing, after costs, about $52,000 for humane society supplies. More than 100 tickets already have been sold and are available at both Humane Society locations -- 6500 S. 70th St. and 2320 Park Blvd. -- as well as at DuTeau Chevrolet, 7300 S. 27th St., where the car is on display in the showroom. “Nobody stays young forever,” Pieloch said, nodding toward the shiny black-cherry ride on Friday. Pak, the 36-year-old South Korean who has won five majors, shot a two-under 70 on Friday. Michelle Wie was one shot behind at six under par after shooting a one-under 71, and Cristie Kerr was two shots back after a two-under 70. Also at five under was first-round leader Shanshan Feng of China, whose bogey-bogey finish left her with a one-over 73. The winds meant Mission Hills "was playing tougher than yesterday," said Feng, who played in the afternoon. "I think I'm still in good shape. Thompson's round included eight birdies — including a 30-foot birdie putt on the first hole — and no bogeys. "I was just trying to stay in the moment and focus on each shot, not really think about what I was shooting," said Thompson, who has three LPGA victories but has never won a major. Pak, who opened with a 67, birdied the par-five second hole when her approach landed six inches from the cup, then shot par golf until the 18th hole, when she dropped a three-foot putt for her second birdie of the day. "Everything was pretty smooth and solid," Pak said. "I hit it really well. Wie birdied the par-four 10th hole, her first hole of play, and she sank a 20-foot putt for another birdie on the par-five second. But she couldn't convert several other birdie opportunities. "Just couldn't get anything going," Wie said. Still, "I'm happy with the 71 today. It's fun being on or near the top of the leaderboard. Three players were three shots behind the leaders at four under: Catriona Matthew, Anna Nordqvist — who won two of her prior four events — and Morgan Pressel, who won here in 2007 at age 18. Inbee Park, the LPGA's No. 1-ranked player and the tournament's defending champion, shot a two-under 70 and was even par for the event. Angel Yin, the 15-year-old amateur from Arcadia who shot a 68 in the opening round, ballooned to a 79 and was three over after 36 holes. Among those missing the cut at five over were Natalie Gulbis, Lizette Salas and Yani Tseng. LPGA Commissioner Michael Whan said he was "disappointed and frustrated" by Golf Digest's decision to put Paulina Gretzky, who isn't a pro golfer, on the magazine's cover. His statement came after some LPGA players also said they were upset with the cover with Gretzky in a provocative pose wearing a bikini top. Change text size for the storyPrintReport an error Mayor Joe Fontana’s dream of reaping political bang from a $300-million mega-project he touted as a huge boost for London’s core may be going bust. More than two years after the mayor unveiled the downtown gateway project, it appears developer Fincore Canada might have difficulty pulling it off, given apparent troubles at a much smaller project outside the city. Fincore isn’t talking about the status of the twin-towered project Fontana announced in his “state of the city” address two years ago. Neither is Fontana, who figured to point to the project as part of his legacy in a re-election bid. Repeated calls for an update from Fincore principal Loredana Onesan, once a fellow board member with Fontana for a charity whose charitable status was yanked, have gone unanswered. The massive anti-aging and wellness development was announced for the north bank of the Thames River, east of Wellington St. Its design features towers of 26 and 18 storeys, linked by medical, commercial and residential components and even a church.Fincore rezoned some land it doesn’t yet own for the development, prompting landowners to appeal to the Ontario Municipal Board. Those issues were resolved and there’s no legal barrier to the project’s first phase on land Fincore owns or controls. The Free Press has learned the company has a troubled history as a developer, raising questions about its SoHo development. A $20-million, 92-suite Oasis Retirement Residence in Dorchester was to have opened in 2013, but remains a vacant field. Construction giant Ellis-Don, which was to manage the job, is no longer involved. And a firm that built components for the project hasn’t been paid. Nearly $2 million in building components it delivered to the site last fall have disappeared in recent weeks. Fincore’s only other development in the area, the $10-million, 55-bed Oasis Retirement Residence in Lucan, opened in 2012 but was taken over by an Oasis funding partner a year later and renamed. The public face of Fincore, Julie Misener, its marketing and communications director, was let go in late July and hasn’t been replaced. She won’t discuss the factors behind her departure. Several months ago, Fincore vice-president Craig Gauld told The Free Press “certain people are saying untrue and inaccurate things about Fincore’s development of the SoHo project.” He insisted then Fincore has “already started the process” to develop its 26-storey tower. Despite repeated calls for comment, ­Fincore provided no update in recent days. The Dorchester project appealed to an 85-year-old London woman, who put down a $1,000 deposit for a suite in the facility. When the complex didn’t open as promised, the woman, who didn’t want to be named, sought and eventually got her money back. “I wanted to be near my neighbours and friends,” she said of moving back to her hometown. “I’m rather disappointed in the whole thing. So, too, is Deputy Mayor Marcel Meyer of Thames Centre, who was at the Oasis ground-breaking last July. “The community expected it fairly soon,” he said, adding, “we are hopeful” it’ll still be built. With all approvals in place, all that’s needed is a building permit, said Thames Centre chief administrator Greg Borduas. Last November, Magest Building Systems of Stratford delivered to the site steel panels it made for the four-storey building. Magest worked with Oasis on the Lucan project and was contracted for fabrication on the Dorchester project, ­Magest president Gary Martin said. “They gave us an order to proceed on Dorchester and we built it. The entire building system was ­produced. “It has not been paid for,” he added. Martin was surprised when told the material was removed from the site several weeks ago — by whom, it’s not known. “Our position is they bought it and we delivered it and they owe us the money,” he said of Fincore and Oasis. Martin declined to value the material, but The Free Press has learned it was worth nearly $2 million. Martin said Magest remains willing to proceed, but has heard nothing from Fincore. Today the site is littered with broken bits of lumber, along with a sign showing the proposed home and a locked sales trailer containing a model of the project. At Ellis-Don, vice-president Brian Waltham said Fincore retained the firm as construction manager and his firm’s logo still appears on the site sign — something he hopes to rectify. “Ellis-Don is no longer involved in the project,” he said. In Lucan, under Fincore ownership, staff members at the Oasis home were fired amid a union organizing drive in 2012. Last September, Marshall Zehr Group, a partner with Fincore, took it over but a company principal declined to say why. Meanwhile, it appears Fincore is looking at other development projects. Several weeks ago, ­Fincore’s Onesan was shown around Stratford by local ­officials. “They were interested in a site for development . . . a larger development,” recalled Mayor Dan Mathieson. Bound by a confidentiality agreement, Mathieson said he has to be careful but it was clear ­Onesan was looking for a vacant site without environmental issues. Fontana was a director and later, chair, of Trinity, which in 2012 issued $152 million in charitable receipts. Trinity’s charitable status was revoked in 2013 by the Canada Revenue Agency, which ruled its charitable activities had become secondary to its activity as a tax shelter. A A A Email There are those who think that if you don't use all your available tax allowances, you're refusing a gift from the Government. It's true that it costs you nothing extra to stick cash in an individual savings account (Isa) compared to a standard deposit account from a bank or building society. It's also true that if you don't use your allowance, you lose it. According to research by Unbiased, a site that promotes professional advice, some 49 million bank account holders will waste more than ?1.1bn by midnight on Saturday by not moving their money into tax-efficient Isas. That's right, the deadline is tonight. And in recognition of that fact, many Isa providers will stay open late to give you the maximum time to use your allowance. But just because you may have until 11.55pm to open an Isa – although it's wisest to do so by 11.30pm to allow time for it to be processed by the midnight deadline – that doesn't mean you should rush to do so. Bear in mind that the Isa limit is soaring to ?15,000 in July. So if you've only got a few thousand pounds to stash away, you still have plenty of time to decide what to do with the money and still be able to put it into a tax-free home. But if you have more than that, then you might want to rush to use this year's allowance before it disappears. You may have even been waiting until the last minute before deciding whether to use the full, 2013-14 equity Isa allowance or put part of it in cash while you dither about the best investment opportunity. Even if you are keen to use the current year's Isa tax-free allowance of ?11,520, don't be persuaded to rush into choosing the wrong investment Isa ahead of the midnight deadline. “If you feel you need more time but don't want to lose your allowance then open your stocks and shares Isa with an initial holding in cash,” suggests Jason Hollands of Bestinvest. “You can then invest in it later having first calmly reviewed your objectives and strategy. John Blowers, of Trustnet Direct, suggests spreading the risk: “A portfolio should spread exposure around various geographic markets and assets, helping balance out the peaks and troughs. With talk of a market correction still rife, this takes on added significance. If you only want a cash Isa, you should adopt a similar approach and buy some time by using an account that offers flexibility, advises Susan Hannums, of Savingschampion.co.uk. “Savers are wise to opt for an easy-to-open Isa such as online or branch-based accounts, to ensure they don't miss out,” she said. “The important thing is to get the account opened and maximised this tax year. Mafia fugitive Domenico Rancadore, pictured with his wife Anne covering their faces at a previous court hearing, has been re-arrestedPAMafia fugitive Domenico Rancadore who last month avoided extradition to Italy has been re-arrested over his connections to the criminal gang, the Metropolitan Police has said . Officers from the extradition unit arrested the 65-year-old in Uxbridge, west London, yesterday, after they received a new European Arrest Warrant request from Italy. It alleges that Rancadore has an "outstanding sentence of seven years imprisonment to serve for participation in Mafia association" between 1987 and 1995 in Palermo. He is due to appear at Westminster Magistrates' Court today. Rancadore, known as The Professor, was first arrested in August last year under a European Arrest Warrant for the same allegations, police said. He had evaded Italian authorities for 20 years, who accused him of fleeing Italy where he faced trial over his alleged Cosa Nostra ''man of honour'' connections. However, he won a battle against extradition back to his native Italy last month after Senior District Judge Howard Riddle ruled that prison conditions in Rancadore's home country would breach his human rights. He was later told at another heading that he would not face an appeal against the judge's ruling. A consent order for the appeal to be withdrawn was waiting to be heard at the High Court, the hearing was told. Granting Rancadore unconditional bail, District Judge Quentin Purdy said: "You're free to go as far as this court is concerned. The court heard the CPS lodged an appeal against the decision to refuse Rancadore's extradition but it was not served to his lawyers within the seven-day time limit. Mr Purdy said unconditional bail had been granted "as a matter of caution" until the High Court sanctions the dismissal of the appeal. Mr Riddle reversed his original decision to extradite Rancadore, who has a serious heart condition, following concerns prison conditions would breach his human rights. Rancadore and his wife moved with their two children to Uxbridge in 1994 and lived under the name of Skinner, the maiden name of Mrs Rancadore's British mother. Police arrested ''Marc Skinner'' under a European arrest warrant on August 7 at the upmarket semi-detached home. At a previous hearing, Mr Rancadore said he came to the UK to give his children "a good life", and to bring his time in Italy to an end. He said the maxi-trial in which he was a defendant in the mid-1980s - involving 460 defendants, one of whom was his father - was a "terrible experience". Asked about changing his name to Marc Skinner, he said it was to end ties with Italy, adding: "This was the only way. Follow AlApril 4, 2014 9:30 PM ET If you still have the same Fantasy rotation that you had when lineups locked on opening night, it might be time to pay the waiver wire a visit. In Fantasy Week 2 (April 7-13), it's largely the third and fourth starters for major league teams that are getting two starts. In other words, there are many more two-start pitchers up for grabs in the free agent pool, and though very few are close to ace quality, at least some of them are good enough to try in standard mixed leagues. Kyle Lohse, Charlie Morton, Jason Vargas and Felipe Paulino are all currently available in at least 35 percent of the leagues on CBSSports.com, and while you may be able to find better options for your final rotation slot, each is at least worth considering. Then again, you may not need to pick up a free agent to upgrade your rotation. In Week 1, both Scott Kazmir and John Lackey showed the form that made them useful Fantasy starters -- not to mention notable comeback stories last season -- yet both are being started in fewer than 70 percent of our leagues. If you own one or both of them and you don't help to raise that number, you'll likely regret it by the end of next week. Ervin Santana is another option to come off the bench, as he could get activated if he puts in sufficient innings in Friday's start at Triple-A Gwinnett. He could make his Braves debut anytime between Wednesday and Saturday. Mat Latos (knee) owners should monitor his situation this weekend as well, as he could come off the disabled list in time for next weekend. Should Latos be ready, he would be a must-start, while Santana would be a viable standard mixed league start, ranking between Zack Wheeler and R.A. Dickey. If these bench and DL options aren't available to you (or even if they are), then you might as well look into the pitchers featured below. And remember, sometimes the best two-start addition is no addition at all. You are probably better off with a solid one-start pitcher than with any of the two-start pitchers who made the "avoid" list further below. 1. 2. Michael Wacha vs. CIN, vs. 3. Tony Cingrani at STL, vs. 4. Gio Gonzalez vs. 5. C.J. Wilson at HOU, vs. 6. 7. 8. 9. John Lackey vs. 10. Dan Haren, LAD (vs. Things could have gone much worse for Haren in his first start of the season, given that he induced only six swinging strikes and seven ground balls. Those are numbers one wouldn't normally associate with six innings of scoreless ball, so Haren's 2014 debut may be a bit misleading. He's not a good bet to improve on his ground ball rate, but he's long been a control artist with average-to- above-average strikeout rates. That profile makes Haren sittable in some one-start weeks, but there should be few two-start weeks -- including this one -- where you should bench him. 11. Tyson Ross, SD (at CLE, vs. After having spent most of the season in the bullpen, Ross finished last year on a 13-start tear that produced a 2.93 ERA and 85 strikeouts in 80 innings, even though he got called strikes at a subpar rate. It's enticing to think what Ross could accomplish if only he could freeze more batters this season. In his first start of 2014, Ross showed his downside, when he walked four batters in a five-inning effort against the Dodgers. The potential for control issues keeps Ross off this week's "must-start" list, but the likelihood for strikeouts galore means it's only in very shallow leagues that owners should even think of benching him. 12. Ubaldo Jimenez, BAL (at NYY, vs. From late May forward, Jimenez was sensational last season for the Indians, as he posted his highest swinging strike rate in three seasons. He also improved his control but was still all too amenable to the flyball. Jimenez gave owners a scare against the Red Sox on Wednesday, as he yielded only one ground ball over six innings in his Orioles' debut. Two of the 15 airborne balls he allowed resulted in home runs, which in turn produced four runs. While Jimenez is flyball-leaning, he is certain to get more grounders in his starts this week. Benching a pitcher who was superb over his last 23 starts last year because of one start would be an overreaction in the vast majority of mixed leagues. 13. Ivan Nova, NYY (vs. BAL, vs. Nova got the Astros to hit 11 grounders on Thursday, but otherwise, it was a very atypical start for the 27-year-old. He got one lone swinging strike in 5 2/3 innings and threw only 53 percent of his pitches for strikes, resulting in one strikeout and five walks. We have seen our share of aberrant performances in this first week so far, and Nova's was about as bizarre as anyone's. Unless he strings a few of these together, look for him to rediscover his command, starting in Week 2. And as a groundball pitcher, Nova is not to be feared with two starts at Yankee Stadium, where he actually posted a 2.44 ERA last season. 14. Corey Kluber, CLE (vs. Kluber continues our run of pitchers who fell short of expectations in their season debut. The A's clobbered Kluber for eight hits and five runs in 3 1/3 innings, as hitters easily squared up on his sinker. According to BrooksBaseball.net, he limited himself to 12 sliders, which was his most effective pitch in 2013. These are trends worth watching, but as with Jimenez and Nova, Kluber's more extended track record should guide owners, rather than an uncharacteristic first start. Last season, Kluber established himself as a pitcher who can miss bats and minimize walks. 15. Kyle Lohse, MIL (at PHI, vs. If we shouldn't expect Jimenez and Kluber to be flyball dispensers going forward, then in all fairness, we shouldn't look to Lohse to be a strikeout machine. His eight-strikeout performance against the Braves was a pleasant surprise -- and also likely matchup-driven, as the Braves like to swing the bat. What Lohse has done exceedingly well and consistently since 2011 is throw strikes, and with ultra-low walk rates, he has been helping owners with ERA and WHIP, if not Ks. Lohse's matchups look good, as the Pirates have struggled to score and the Phillies don't have many on-base threats. It could be an especially good week for ERA and WHIP, and with two starts, strikeouts are less of a concern. I'd start Lohse over the following one-start pitchers: A.J. 16. 22. Mark Buehrle vs. 23. Trevor Cahill at SF, vs. 24. Felix Doubront vs. 25. 26. Tanner Scheppers at BOS, vs. 27. Kyle Kendrick vs. MIL, vs. 28. Zach McAllister vs. 29. Aaron Harang vs. NYM, vs. 30. Edwin Jackson vs. 31. 32. Jarred Cosart vs. 33. Kevin Correia vs. OAK, vs. Morton got 2014 started the right way, tossing six shutout innings against the Cubs. The North Siders appear to be one of the majors' friendlier matchups, and Morton gets them again in Week 2. Meanwhile, the Brewers have enough thump in their lineup that they will eventually shake their early-season doldrums, but Morton has been one of the majors' best pitchers at keeping the ball in the park. He's a poor bet to sustain the strikeout-per-inning pace of his first start, but Morton should lower your staff's ERA this coming week. That makes him a viable two-start pitcher in some mixed leagues, but because his control is nowhere as good as Lohse's, he's a less attractive waiver option. I'd start the following one-start pitchers over Morton: Lance Lynn, Clay Buchholz, A.J. 17. Tim Hudson, SF (vs. ARI, vs. If owners had concerns about Hudson's return from a fractured ankle, he assuaged them in his season debut against the Diamondbacks. Hudson tossed 7 2/3 scoreless innings in which he allowed only three hits and no walks and induced 12 swinging strikes. High whiff counts probably won't be the norm for Hudson, but sharp control and a lack of extra-base hits should be. As a sinkerballer with a below-average strikeout rate, Hudson has similar appeal to Morton, and like his Pirates' counterpart, he's fringy in standard mixed leagues, even with two starts. I'd start the following one-start pitchers over Hudson: A.J. 18. Jason Vargas, KC (vs. This is the sort of week in which I typically clear an active roster spot for Vargas. He has two starts against teams with generally mediocre lineups, and both of his venues are tough on home-run hitters. Because Vargas is prone to the long ball, he needs to be avoided outside of these scenarios, but because he is fairly stingy with walks and gets infield flies frequently, he usually registers low ERAs and WHIPs in pitchers' parks. Perhaps if the better hitters in the Rays' lineup weren't righties (plus switch-hitting Ben Zobrist), I would rank Vargas a little higher. Given his career .434 slugging percentage allowed against righties, there is enough risk involved with Vargas' one home start for owners to view the lefty as a last resort in standard mixed leagues. I'd start the following one-start pitchers over Vargas: R.A. 19. Heading into the weekend, Colon is owned in 70 percent of the leagues on CBSSports.com. As a two-start pitcher, that percentage could climb even higher, but his new and current owners could wind up disappointed with his Week 2 results. Colon is still notoriously contact-friendly, but in two seasons in Oakland, he was surprisingly effective due to low walk and home run rates. He showed against the Nationals this week that he still throws strikes, but he may have previewed a new proclivity for allowing homers, as Adam LaRoche and Jayson Werth took him out of the park. No longer protected by spacious O.co Coliseum, Colon could be due for a rude awakening, at least at homer-neutral Turner Field against a powerful Braves lineup. 20. Jose Quintana, CHW (at COL, vs. After a miserable Cactus League season in which Quintana allowed 20 earned runs in 11 innings with six strikeouts and seven walks, he bounced back with a decent effort against the Twins. Quintana emerged with improved command (64 percent strikes thrown) and a higher K/9 ratio (8.2) from July forward last season, and he looked more like that pitcher in his season debut. Though Quintana allowed five runs in six innings versus Minnesota, only two of them were earned, and he threw 69 of 109 pitches for strikes and finished with eight strikeouts. In a normal two-start week, that might be enough to embolden owners to start him, but with his first start coming at Coors Field, it's probably best to save Quintana for another two-start week in standard mixed leagues. 21. Felipe Paulino, CHW (at COL, vs. Paulino, like Quintana, turned in a mildly encouraging start against the Twins, and he, too, will have to tame Coors Field in a Week 2 start. In some ways, Paulino appears to be a better option than Quintana, as he throws harder and has been more of a strikeout pitcher over his career. With the harder cheese also comes more wildness, and he is just as much of a home run risk as his teammate. Though Paulino will likely allow less contact than Quintana, he's a bigger threat to your team's ERA, if not its WHIP. (10:30 pm ET) White Sox infielder Gordon Beckham is on his rehab assignment for Double-A Birmingham as he recovered from a strained left oblique, but he isn't on the verge of returning to the majors yet. According to MLB.com, he is not expected to return until the team's current road trip ends next Wednesday in Colorado. Beckham was also scratched from the lineup Friday, though manager Robin Ventura was not sure why as of the end of the White Sox's game against the Royals. by Chris Towers | CBSSports. (10:19 pm ET) Indians designated hitter Jason Giambi will sit down with manager Terry Francona in the coming days to discuss the team's plan for his recover from a broken rib, according to MLB.com Friday. There is a chance Giambi will not need a minor-league rehab assignment, despite opening the season on the 15-day disabled list. by Chris Towers | CBSSports. (10:10 pm ET) Rockies reliever Boone Logan could return from the disabled list as early as Sunday according to MLB.com, as he has recovered from offseason elbow surgery. He is pitching his second straight day Friday for Triple-A Colorado Springs, and he could be back Sunday assuming he avoids any sort of setback. by Chris Towers | CBSSports. (10:08 pm ET) Though Rockies manager Walt Weiss told MLB.com he is still planning on rotating his various outfield options in and out of the lineup, that was before Charlie Blackmon's huge performance Friday against the Diamondbacks. Blackmon made his third start in five chances and made the most of it, going 6 for 6 with five runs driven in and four scores in a 12-2 win. He had three doubles and a home run, his first of the season. Blackmon is now hitting .563 though five games, with nine hits, six RBI an four extra-base hits in 16 at-bats, while striking out just once. by Chris Towers | CBSSports. (10:03 pm ET) Orioles third baseman Manny Machado continues to recover from a knee injury, and was able to do some baseball activities Thursday. Beyond running, it is not clear what these activities entailed, but MLB.com reports he felt good the following day. Machade remains without a concrete timetable for his return from knee surgery, but it is a good sign that he has been cleared to begin running. by Chris Towers | CBSSports. (10:00 pm ET) Orioles pitcher Dylan Bundy continues to make progress in his recovery from Tommy John surgery, as he threw a 30-pitch side session Friday. Bundy is working out at the team's spring training complex in Sarasota, Fla., and remains out until at least June as he recovers. by Chris Towers | CBSSports. (9:58 pm ET) Orioles pitcher Johan Santana threw 35 pitches in a side session Friday, and was able to mix in all of his pitches as he continues to recover from a shoulder injury. He is set to throw a situational bullpen session Monday according to MLB.com, and he remains on a timetable that could see him pitching in the majors by June. by Chris Towers | CBSSports. (9:54 pm ET) Orioles outfielder Francisco Peguero is making progress in his recovery from a wrist injury. Just days after having his cast removed, MLB.com reports he is set to begin a hitting program next week, likely as soon as Monday. by Chris Towers | CBSSports. (9:25 pm ET) White Sox starting pitcher Erik Johnson couldn't do anything right in his first start of the season Friday, a 7-5 loss to the Royals. Johnson was tagged for seven runs in just four-plus innings of work, and he escaped just two of them without allowing any damage. He gave up 10 hits and three walks in 4 2/3 innings, while striking out just two. Johnson acquitted himself well in a brief cup of coffee last season, but didn't do much to show it was sustainable in his first outing. His next start is set for Wednesday in Colorado. by Igor Mello | CBSSports. (9:25 pm ET) Rangers pitcher Joe Saunders was forced to leave his first start of the season against the Rays on Friday, after taking an Evan Longoria line drive off his left ankle, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports. Saunders suffered the injury in the fourth inning and was taken back for X-rays, which came back negative. He allowed five runs -- four earned -- on six hits and three walks while striking out four over 3 2/3 innings pitched. His status remains up in the air for his next start on Friday against Houston. 10J.J.
