Updated: Apr 4, 2014 6:24 PMWESLACO - Two Weslaco women said they want the new sheriff to reopen their sister's cold case. Mary Lopez and Toni Bautista said their sister Carolina was 20 when she was murdered 33 years ago. Carolina Bautista was reported missing on April 7, 1981. Ten days later, her body was found near an irrigation canal. The body had multiple stab wounds. Family members said the 20-year-old went for a drive with high school friend Pete Flores. The two were last seen just after the sun went down. Both bodies were nude near the irrigation canal near 18th Street in Weslaco. Their car was found abandoned several miles away. Autopsy results revealed that Flores drowned. Bautista suffered stab wounds. Lopez remembers the day investigators asked her to identify the body. "We gasped, because what we saw was not our sister. It was just remains. ... unidentifiable remains," Lopez said. Bautista's case went cold in 1993. "We have spoken to over a dozen investigators," Bautista said. Investigators gave her a piece of evidence they had. A psychic used it in an effort to find answers. "We just have to undo the puzzle and put it back together again, and that is what takes time," former Sheriff Lupe Trevino told CHANNEL 5 NEWS in 2013. CHANNEL 5 NEWS asked interim Sheriff Jose Eduardo Guerra if there are any plans to reopen the case. "One of the mandates Sheriff Guerra is pushing is working with other agencies," Hidalgo County Sheriff Cmdr. Joel Rivera said. Rivera said the sheriff's first priority is to familiarize himself with the department. Next he will seek to increase cooperation with other law enforcement agencies. Rivera said cold cases are frequently reviewed. Bautista hopes the changes come quickly and bring her closure soon. KRGV.
