SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- Each week the O-Zone team will rank the Top 15 teams in all five classes based on dominance by class. Factors include overall and recent success along with momentum and strength of schedule. We encourage coaches to offer their input by emailing mscott1@schurz.com. Catholic (C3, 7-0, NA) – The Irish are a year removed from finishing runner-up in Class 3 and expectations are even higher this spring with 12 seniors returning, including the 1-2 punch of Tyler Ast and Matthew Tipton. Top to bottom this lineup has the power and speed to produce a ton of runs this season. Hartville (C2, 1-0, NA) – No that is not a typo. The defending class 2 state champs have been tormented by Mother Nature this spring and can lay claim to only a win over Seymour. With that being said we thing the Eagles are stacked for another Final Four run. Forsyth (C3, 4-1, NA) – The entire pitching staff returns for a team that was ranked number 1 in Class 3 for much of last season before being upset by Fair Grove 1-0 in sectionals. The pitching is there. The hitting is there. Head coach Jim Julian says the key will be fielding the ball and executing offensively. Willard (C5, 5-1, NA) – The Tigers are coming off back-to-back Final Four appearances and while they lost a lot from last year the do return a solid core led by all-state center fielder Keaton Presley (one of the area’s top leadoff men) and first baseman Luke Latham (one of the area’s top power hitters). Mix in a good group of pitchers, including sophomore ace Kyle Smith and the Tigers could be making a third straight trip to the Final Four. Rogersville (C4, 6-3, NA) – The Wildcats also made a trip to the Final Four last June and while Gruener, Boever and company are on to college baseball, Coach Ledl has some major talent returning, including all-state 2nd baseman Bailey Jenkins and junior Arkansas commit Jacob Schlessner, who brings a high 80’s fastball to go with a solid bat. Three early losses to Webb City, Carl Junction and Willard are troubling, but remember this was a team that ripped off a 21-game winning streak to the Final Four last year. Lebanon (C5, 5-2, NA) – With a pair of D-1 pitchers (Austin Knight and Brad Archer both signed with Missouri State) the Yellow Jackets are a formidable foe in Class 5. They went 3-2 in a highly competitive season opening trip to Orlando, Florida. Upon returning they’ve dominated the Ozarks. Knight (2-0, 1.08 ERA, 18 K in 13 innings) threw a no-hitter against Rolla. Archer (1-1, 2.05 ERA, 10 K in 7.1 innings) followed with a complete game shutout against Marshfield. Billings (C2, 5-0, NA) – The Wildcats aren’t just beating people, they’re killing them. In wins over Lockwood, Dadeville, Wheaton, Marionville and Verona they scored 62 to their opponents’ 9 runs. Pitching has been the key for Coach Stolte’s club. They’ve used seven different pitchers, posting a 1.27 team ERA. Dadeville (C1, 3-2, NA) – The Wildcats got hot late last season and made a historic run to the Final Four. Many believe a return trip is in the forecast for Coach Rountree’s team. So far they’ve fallen to Billings and Pierce City, but have picked up big wins over Sarcoxie, Lockwood and Sheldon. Conway (C3, 5-2, NA) – The Bears have dodged the weather better than most this spring and while they have some nice wins (Mt Vernon and Clever) it’s important to look at their losses; an 8-3 setback to Strafford and being edged out 10-9 by Class 3 2nd ranked Forsyth. Marshfield (C4, 6-1, NA) – Coach Mac and Jays ran out to a 6-0 start earning a Top 10 spot in the Coaches poll. College of the Ozarks signee Logan McAnarney is off to a nice start, 7-22 (.409 avg), 7 RBI. This week got off to a bumpy start with a 10-0 setback against Class 5 Lebanon. Nixa (C5, 6-0, NA) – The Eagles are not only perfect they’ve picked up some nice wins (Branson, Republic, Webb City, Glendale). After going 15-12 last year the Eagles return some key pieces, including one of the area’s most opposing pitchers; 6-7 junior righty Jacob Ruder, who tossed a complete game 2-hitter, striking out seven Tuesday against Glendale. Spokane (C2, 4-1, NA) – Of the Owls’ four wins they’ve all come against larger competition (Reeds Spring, Aurora, Clever and Forsyth). Coach Yates and the Owls captured the deep ROTB Tournament last week as the only Class 2 team in the field, handing Forsyth its only loss 6-5 in the championship. The Panthers returned the favor earlier this week handing Spokane its only loss. Bakersfield (C1, 3-2, NA) – The Lions’ two losses are both competitive games against larger teams (Yellville-Summit and Viola are 10-2 in Arkansas). Coming off back-to-back trips to state Coach Winslow’s club is poised for a return with eight of the top 10 players back from last season. The future is even brighter as only two seniors start. Mtn Grove (C3, 4-0, NA) – The Panthers captured the Houston Lead-Off Tournament with squeakers over Cuba and Houston along with a blowout of Salem. During those three games they allowed exactly one run, equating to a .053 ERA (Wow!) Garrett Newberry is off to a nice start with a pair of wins, including a complete game shutout against Salem. Skyline (C2, 6-1, NA) – The Tigers have earned high praise from area coaches and well deserved. However, after running out to a dominating 5-0 start they got bamboozled by Jacob Wade and the Strafford Indians 23-4. Frustrated much? I’d say so, considering they beat Osceola 25-1 the next time out. The Springfield Cardinals, featuring several top prospects, opened season 10 at Hammons Field Thursday night in a 7-4 loss to the San Antonio Missions. Glendale outlasted Kickapoo in PK's.
